Privacy Policy
Last updated: 23 October 2026
Ramble exists to get lost pets home, and that means looking after some personal information. We collect as little as we can, never sell it, and don't use advertising trackers. This page explains everything in plain English.
1. Who we are
[Your full name], trading as Ramble (Ramble) is the "data controller" for the information described here. Address: [Postal address]. ICO registration: [ICO registration number].
Questions or requests about your data: hello@ramble.pet.
2. What we collect
From you as an owner or customer:
- Your name, email address, phone number and delivery address, and any extra addresses you add (Premium).
- Your pets' details: name, breed, age, colour, notes, photos, and any health information you add (allergies, medication, vet details, health records and documents).
- Alert contacts you add: their name, email, phone number and relationship to you.
- Your orders: what you bought, prices, discount codes used, delivery and tracking details. Payments are handled by Stripe, so we never see or store your full card number.
- Your choices: privacy settings for each pet, email preferences, and Premium plan details.
From finders (people who scan a tag):
- Each scan: the time, which tag, and the type of phone and browser (e.g. "iPhone · Safari").
- Only if the finder taps "Send my location" and their phone asks permission: their location at that moment.
- Only if the finder sends a message: the message and any contact details they choose to include.
Automatically:
- Basic technical information needed to run and protect the site, such as IP address and browser type. We use IP addresses briefly to stop spam and abuse (rate limiting) and don't build profiles from them.
- A record of the emails we've sent you (to whom, subject and when), so we can check delivery problems. We don't keep copies of the email text.
If you contact us, we'll have your message and contact details.
3. Why we use it, and our legal basis
- To provide Ramble (performance of our contract with you): running your account and pets' pages, showing finders what you've chosen, forwarding finders' messages and locations to you and your contacts, delivering orders, Premium features and customer support.
- To take payments and keep tax records (contract and legal obligation).
- To keep Ramble safe and working (legitimate interests): preventing fraud, spam and misuse, fixing problems, and understanding which features are used in a privacy-friendly way.
- To pass a finder's location or message to an owner (the finder's consent, given when they choose to share or send).
- To send you occasional news and offers (your consent, which you can withdraw any time in Settings or from any email). Service emails, like order updates and finder alerts, aren't marketing.
We don't sell personal information, and we don't use it for advertising. We don't make decisions about you by automated means.
4. What finders can see
Only what you choose for each pet, in your privacy settings. By default finders see your pet's name, photo and details, your first name and your town. Your phone number and full address are hidden unless you turn them on. Your email address is never shown: finders' messages are forwarded to you.
Microchip numbers, health records and documents are never shown to finders. Allergies, medication and vet details are shown only if you leave "Health info" on, because they can matter to whoever is caring for your pet.
5. Companies that help us
Like most online shops, we use trusted service providers for parts of Ramble. They only use your information to do that job for us, under contracts that protect it:
- Our payment provider, for payments and Premium subscriptions. We never see your full card number.
- Our website hosting, database and storage providers, who keep the site running and your information safe.
- Our email providers, for sending emails and running our inbox.
- Delivery companies such as Royal Mail, for posting your order (name and address only).
- A map provider, for showing map pins in your scan history (Premium).
Email hello@ramble.pet if you'd like the names of the companies we use.
We may also share information if the law requires it, to protect someone's safety, or if Ramble is ever sold or merged (the new owner would have to keep to this policy).
6. Information sent outside the UK
Some of these companies are based in, or use servers in, the US or EU. When information leaves the UK, it's protected by UK adequacy regulations (including the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework) or the UK's International Data Transfer Agreement and Addendum.
7. How long we keep it
- Your account, pets and contacts: until you delete them, or your account.
- Finders' locations: deleted after 12 months.
- Scan records and finder messages: while your account exists.
- Orders and payment records: 6 years, because tax law requires it.
- Checkouts that were started but never paid: deleted after 3 days.
- Rate-limiting records (used to stop abuse): deleted after 1 day.
- Messages to our support email: up to 2 years, unless needed longer for an ongoing issue.
When you delete your account, we delete your profile, pets, photos, documents and contacts straight away, switch off your tags, and keep only the order records the law requires. Backups are overwritten within 30 days.
8. How we keep it safe
Everything is sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Logins use one-time codes rather than passwords. Our database is locked so that browsers can't read it directly; only our own server can, after checking who you are. Health documents are stored privately and only open through short-lived links. Admin access needs a second code from an authenticator app.
No system is perfect. If something ever went wrong that put your information at risk, we'd tell you and the ICO as the law requires.
9. Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask us to:
- give you a copy of your information (you can download most of it yourself in Settings, Privacy & data)
- correct anything that's wrong (most of it you can edit yourself in your dashboard)
- delete your information (Settings, Privacy & data, Delete account)
- restrict or object to how we use it, or move it to another service
- stop marketing emails at any time
- withdraw consent you've given, at any time
Email hello@ramble.pet and we'll reply within one month. It's free. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, please tell us first, and you can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk, 0303 123 1113).
10. Children
Ramble accounts are for adults (18 and over). Anyone can scan a tag and help a pet, but please don't share personal details in a message if you're under 13.
12. Changes to this policy
If we change how we use your information in a way that matters, we'll email you before it applies. The date at the top shows when this policy last changed.
